Kakacoin ($kakacoin), known in 2014 as KaKaCoin (KKC), was announced on Bitcointalk on 28 January 2014 by a developer posting as Mr-alex, under the headline "I HAVE A DREAM". It was billed as the first virtual currency with VoIP built into the wallet: calls, messages and payments from one client, paid for only in KKC. This page is the story of that coin, reconstructed from the original announcement thread.

The dream: a VoIP coin
The pitch was that the KaKa client would let people make phone calls and send messages the way Skype, Tango or WeChat did, right inside the wallet, backed by a server separate from the blockchain. International calls and the like would be paid for only in KaKaCoin, giving the coin instant utility. A VoIP engineer was said to be on the team, and the thread's first reply came from one, describing an anonymous call, SMS and payment app that used nothing but a KaKaCoin address.
Timeline
- 28 Jan 2014Launch. The announcement goes up with Windows and Linux wallets. Within minutes the thread fills with the usual launch-day chaos: virus scans (the wallet came back clean), questions about how to mine, and complaints about the 2% premine. The first pool, pool.kakacoin.com, is live within three hours, followed by the Nitro pool at kaka.nitro.org.
- 29 Jan 2014Two more pools open (Validation Error Pools and altcoinpool.org). A community member starts the Cryptsy listing vote. A block explorer appears at explorer.kakacoin.com.
- 30 Jan 2014The community pushes the dev to fund promotion. Mr-alex agrees to pay coins for games, an explorer and other work, and a bounty list is posted: 4000 KKC for a Mac client, 6000 for the first explorer, 3000 for the first game, plus rewards for shops, videos and news coverage.
- 31 Jan 2014Network hashrate grows from about 75 MH/s to over 400 MH/s in two days. Miners report coins already changing hands privately while everyone waits for an exchange.
- 1 Feb 2014First exchange listing: KKC/LTC on SwissCex. A Cryptsy vote-and-earn giveaway starts.
- 2 Feb 2014Mac client v1.0.0.1 released. It ships with missing Qt frameworks and crashes on launch; the community posts MacPorts and Homebrew workarounds.
- 3–7 Feb 2014Two giveaways launch, new addnodes are published, and KKC is added to the AllCrypt exchange vote. A holder runs a Twitter campaign tagging every exchange.
- 17 Feb 2014Listed on CryptoRush with KKC/BTC, KKC/LTC and KKC/POT pairs. Promotion is "still planned".
- 17 Mar 2014Mr-alex's last post: a new Chinese exchange, Weithui. The same day the thread asks whether the coin is dead. The pools have shut down and the Chinese QQ group has moved on to another coin.
- May–Aug 2014A handful of stragglers. Someone can't find a node to sync with. The thread's final post, on 9 August 2014, concludes the coin has fallen by the wayside.
- 2026KaKaCoin returns. This website, offline since 2014, is restored from the Internet Archive. $KKC comes back first as a token on Robinhood Chain, then announces its relaunch on Solana via Pump.fun under a new name, Kakacoin, and a new ticker, $kakacoin. The official contract address is always on the home page.
About the name
"KaKa" was chosen by a developer who, by the community's own account, had no idea what the word means in a long list of other languages. The thread noticed immediately. Twelve years later it's part of the charm.
